Malcolm Craig Gilbert, United Kingdom

I am 44 and was born in Belfast,Northern Ireland. This gallery deals in violence and it makes no apology. We live in societies where a few can attempt to control the masses, either by fear or intimidation,or by our corruption!

I view it in a form of cartoon vignette;memories of both the real and perceived.

Visitors Comments:

Nice job

Very nice sense of color and visual interpretation, well done, very layered

photos

Really nice. You've a great eye for composition in urban landscapes. Nice light touch with Photoshop on the water silo and carpark (?) - both are favourites.

Good adventurous stuff - but don't let the medium (photoshop gimmicks) destroy the message

Maybe if you had power over your convictions JPW you might have the intelligence to actually say why NOT, then maybe i would listen. But i can only dream of your profound wisdom it seems!

furthermore JPW, and others! If you put a gallery up on this site it is fair game for comment by all- not just for what you want to here, and what you want removed from it! I am brave enough to leave all comments on this site!

Very good, very dramatic, and captures a strong sense of (one side of) NI. I've done some stuff there myself, but not at all as good as yours. Incidentally, I see you've changed some of your shots recently.

Cheers Chris, thanks for real input ! Yeah, it's an on-going project, and something i have to get out of myself as it had a personal affect on me: This is a way for me to deal with it that i find therapeutic. What was your subject matter in NI?

In answer to your question, shots around the Shankill, Andersonstown, East Belfast, early mornings, grim weather, debris, murals etc., colours distorted to heighten bleakness. Not great but one or two work OKish.

Malcom Gilbert

Wow, very original stuff, some of it is a real bag of balls though, is that chris moyles in image 10 ? its amazing the clarity he achives thru his camera phone.
Posted on 2009-03-02 03:26:16 - David Keery

Kudos!

I think when you know what these images refer to, THEN they become even more powerful. In my opininion some of them do look very "staged" and in that sense weaker than others. There are some images that hold their own, and they are undoubtedly the ones that got you high up in these competitions. They are shocking images, and I think the style you've chosen is very "Belfast" - does that sound silly? I mean it just adds to the atmosphere you're trying to recreate. Kudos, dude!!
Posted on 2009-04-02 23:49:13 - Andrew Parker
Thank you Andrew for your comments. The work tries to form a narrative of personal experience and viewpoints. Indeed the work has to be staged and represents a Tableau style in it's concept. It is all just a metaphor for the way i see my surroundings. I understand that it can be a bit hit and miss. Thanks again.

I really love your ideas, your work is so original and beautifully composed. The light on the second one down on the right is lovely.

Even i don't like to watch the violence on the photos, real or faked, i find your series great. I love the way you make the pics so graphic and though more dramatic. And of course i agree, we made this cruel, violent cold society and i still "study" myself how to come out of it.The only thing i can say is that we should start with ourselves.(I read & respect philosoph Krishnamurti alot). Congrats

Fantastic series of photos. Im from Belfast as well. I like the Samson and Goliath in the background of a very harsh image
Posted on 2009-06-09 04:45:04 - Chris Byrne
A tense and thought-provoking series Malcolm. I've revisited several times now to go over the small details.
Especially struck by the Sindy/M16(?!) image with the Bible & poetry book in foreground.
You mix the everyday mundane with the implicit threat to great effect!
Posted on 2009-06-23 11:25:29 - Angela Melling
Thanks for your interest Angela. The work is allegorical in structure so indeed the small details give weight if they are read properly. Everyone can read them and achieve their own meaning.

Great work

Fabulous photography Malcom! You really have managed isolate and bring out the pure violance and brutality in a way that makes the viewer think. Completely the oposite of todays movie and TV news photograpy. Great work!
