Hidden menace and lyrical promise

The qualities of film noir are an influence on many of the world’s great photographers, but surprisingly few manage to recreate the effect of electrifying the senses as Daniel Murtagh, a New York based artist.

Now much in demand by the fashion world for his ethereal studies of women and the depiction of moments in time that engender qualities of surreal and mystifying beauty, Murtagh is clearly destined for great things.

The cinema reference is no accident, and it is a medium that Murtagh has explored with much enthusiasm of late. But whatever his medium, the sensibility honed on the Old Master paintings of his student days, and the ethereal light of the streets of Paris, is never far away.
