Leica S2
Have Your Cake

by JULIA SONK

This years’s Photokina was a culmination of the tight competition among high end camera manufacturers. Recently purchased by Salzburg ACM Projektentwicklungs GmbH, Leica didn’t intend to stay behind.

THEIR new S series DSLR model – S2 - with 37.5 megapixels, is certainly a noteworthy addition to the high megapixel line-up. When compared to Hasselblad, S2 will have less megapixels but its new ‘Maestro’ image processing system promises lower power consumption and, according to Leica product manager, Maike Harberts, ‘to perform twice as fast as Hasselblad H-series cameras and put in a better performance at high ISOs too’.

The waterproof, metal body, in size comparable to 35mm cameras, nevertheless hides a significantly more powerful beast – a 30 x 45 mm sensor (56% larger than 35mm). Additionally, the dual shutter system offers choice of focal plane or leaf and compatible Leica lenses bring S2’s optics alive from ultra wide to telephone view.

The revolutionary release of S2 was likened by Leica to their legendary 1925’s A model. Powerful as medium frame and flexible as 35mm – you can have your cake and eat it, it seems.
