A Fine exposure of the artist's work

by MIKE VON JOEL

It is always a pleasure to see publishers still taking risks with non-commercial, high quality books of photographs for their own sake.

Landscapes 2001 - 2003

Richard Billingham
96pp Hb.
DEWI LEWIS
ISBN: 978-1-904587-38-5

THESE PICTURES are truly - and literally - landscape studies. Billingham has turned his lens on views across the world, from Ethiopia to Greece, Norfolk to Pakistan - all quietly confident, all objects of contemplation.

The images each have their own energy, they are not uniform other than by subject - and there are surprises, revealed by the simple title and date, when a location is in a most unexpected part of the world.

There is an erudite introduction by critic, Sacha Craddock, but sadly no location notes
or technical commentary by the author himself. An oversight by the editors and an opportunity missed in an otherwise fine exposure of the artist's work.
