A retrospective of Hiroshi Sugimoto at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin includes 70 examples of his photographs as well as sculpture.

This is the largest survey so far of works by this Japanese artist who was born in Tokyo and in 1970’s moved to the USA (LA and NY). His specialty is staged black and white photography produced in series - ‘I am not a hunter, I already have the pictures in my head, then I go out in order to realize these ideas’. The picture above is one of his early works where he used stuffed animals positioned in front of a painted scene.

This is a touring exhibition and after Berlin, the show continues to Düsseldorf, Salzburg and Lucerne, but the Berlin edition has been re-organised by the artist to respond to the architecture and collections of the hosting museum.
