The Photoshelter packs it up

The PhotoShelter Image Collection has announced last week its closure due to the inability to keep up with the big guys.

THE DECISION to close the stock photography marketplace, as of 10 October, came as PhotoShelter felt that they are unable to provide their image-promoting services as planned when The Collection was started last year.

Their mission was to offer an alternative image database which is open to all and is primarily supporting the photographers, with the 70/30 split on the usage fees. A very fair treatment indeed but one that didn’t cover the costs. The PhotoShelter blame the shortfall on a more aggressive and monopolistic approach of Getty Images who have taken over the majority of the market.

The Personal Archive service by PhotoShelter which includes photo storage and an opportunity to sell images, remains unaffected.
