Joyce Tenneson
A Life in Photography

Recognized as one of the leading photographers of her generation, Joyce Tenneson’s images have been described as sensuous, haunting and timeless.

Griffin Museum of Photography June 14 - August 12, 2007

By Joyce Tenneson

Whether her subject is the secretive and unseen life of flowers, feminine psyche and spirituality, or the character and wisdom of aged men, her photographs capture the beauty and fragility of life.

A celebration of three decades of photographic work, the exhibition is the first retrospective of Tenneson’s celebrated career and will include images from her Flower Portraits, Light Warriors, Wise Women and Intimacy series, as well as unseen early photographs and self-portraits.

One of the most sought after photographers of our time, Tenneson has developed a unique vision that gives her photographs an immediately recognizable signature style.

Described by critics as ‘one of America’s most interesting portrayer of the human character,’ Tenneson combines sensuality and spirituality to create deeply affecting images that are ethereal and often mystical.

Tenneson was born in Boston and grew up on the grounds of a convent where her parents worked. Tenneson describes the experience of growing up in an environment of rituals and cycles as having greatly influenced her future work, contributing to her fascination with the stages of life.

While her early self-portrait work was autobiographical, her more recent projects are more metaphorical, which Tenneson describes as ‘part of an on-going visual diary that reflects my inner journey.’
